RESEARCH INTERESTS

Research has become a passion for me.  It is similar to the problem solving aspect of accounting that I enjoy, but my academic research includes analysing the social world with theories.  I am especially interested in feminist studies, discourse and narrative analysis.

While studying toward my Masters of Entrepreneurship and Innovation I was struck by the lack of reference to Women Entrepreneurs. This lead me to wonder about Women's experience of entrepreneurship.

Although it's not popular to talk about it, it is no secret that women often have a much tougher time in business than men. I wanted to know how women entrepreneurs overcome the gendered obstacles to successfully do business. I wanted to know how they avoided becoming overwhelmed by the assumptions people made about them, and how they managed the diverse demands placed upon them.

So I enrolled at Monash University to do my research within a Master of Arts by Research and Coursework at the Centre for Women's Studies and Gender Research.  I interviewed six very generous women entrepreneurs about doing business. Because sexism is so taboo, straight questions were unlikely to reveal the depth and complexity of gendered experiences, so I asked general questions about their experience of managing relationships and doing business. Their answers were rich stories of highs, lows, family, business, inspiration and despair. Analysing their words was painstaking, enlightening, surprising and inspiring.

I've uploaded a paper which I'll be presenting at a the 6th AGSE International Research Exchange
in Adelaide early next year.  If you're interested, please have a look - I'd love to hear your feedback!
